About Us

History of Troop 28

Troop 28, B.S.A. was first chartered in May of 1936 and sponsored by Stanley Congregational Church.  In 2020 with the closing of Stanley Church, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church became our new sponsor organization.

The Troop meets every Monday evening at 7:00pm at Gloria Dei Church at 300 Shunpike Road  in Chatham (next to Cougar field).

Since our beginnings, the Troop has provided to the youth of Chatham the special opportunities that Scouting had to offer and continually has maintained a varied year-round program of camping, hiking, sports, high adventure activities, conservation and community service projects and a week of camping in the summer.

During the Second World War, the Troop was involved with many “recycling and conserving resources projects as their contribution, along with most other Americans, to the war effort. Those ideals have become an integral part of Scouting today.  Following the Outdoor Code as a group, Scouting sets an example in the areas of resource conservation, respect for the outdoors and nature, keeping our camping and recreation areas and communities clean and recycling as much as possible.  Troop 28 continues this more than ever needed tradition of caring for and preserving what we have now, not only for today, but also for tomorrow.

Troop 28 is part of the Fishawack District, in the Patriots' Path Council.  The Patriots’ Path Council serves more than 19,000 youth members and 6,000 leaders each year in the counties of Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union and parts of Middlesex, New Jersey. Some 400 local organizations have a Cub Pack, Scout Troop, Venture Crew, Varsity Team or Explorer Post as a part of their service to youth.  Through the years the Troop has taken part in numerous fundraising efforts for the Council.  Because of our efforts, a cabin has been built and a campsite created at Camp Mt. Allamuchy.

Troop 28 has maintained a high standard of Scouting that has been noted by the Council and many volunteers in Scouting. Nationwide two percent of young people who join scouting go on to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. With determination and the right attitude a little over five percent make it to Eagle Scout in our Troop.

We have a strong adult leadership group that puts in many hours to help plan the program and to train the junior leaders to run their troop.  Most leaders have had Basic Scout Training and a few have completed “Woodbadge.” Over the years some of our leaders have reached District and Council recognitions for the time and efforts they have made for Scouting and their Scouts.

Our Scouts are also involved with many special Scouting activities including the Order of the Arrow, Florida Sea Base, National Jamborees and the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Scouting offers you the chance to have fun, to learn, to grow, to meet challenges, and to become a leader. Troop 28 has all this and more.
